NASA’s CUROSITY drills into its first Martian rock
CUROSITY, satellite rover over Mars drilled into the Martian surface for the first time as part of an effort to learn if the planet most like Earth in the solar system ever had conditions to support microbial life. Pictures beamed back to Earth on Saturday that is on 9th February 2013, showed a hole about 1.6 cm wide and 6.4 cm deep in a patch of fine-grained sedimentary bedrock that appears to have been in contact with water. The drilling, which took place on 8th February 2012, produced a small pile of powder that will be fed into two onboard laboratory instruments to determine the rock’s chemical makeup. The drill is the last of the rover’s 10 science instruments to be tested.
ESA’s first mission to the Red Planet is Mars Express. It comprises an orbiter carrying seven scientific instruments to probe the planet’s atmosphere, structure and geology, including a search for evidence of hidden water. The main spacecraft will also release the UK’s small Beagle 2 lender to gather and test rock and soil samples on the surface. British space probe Beagle 2 failed to broadcast a signal on December 25, 2003, to confirm it had landed on Mars, but scientists said they were waiting for a second contact opportunity.
Wearing a phone like a watch
No one wants to soil a device that has all their information, contacts and more. But when four students found themselves in a similar dilemma two years ago, their solution went beyond wiping hands. They have now come up with a wearable phone the size and design of a wristwatch. Here one can say it as a “smart watch” of the present techno world.
This SMART WATCH with a 2-inch screen comes with a 2-megapixel camera and runs on an older version of the Android operating system. A speaker, camera is built into the device. What’s more, the end of the wrist-strap can be plugged into a USB socket to be used as a storage device and also to charge the phone. There are other multinational corporations that are working on similar, wearable devices, with some available in the market as well. But the Indian quartets insist their device is different.
“There are other such products in the market, but they mostly synchronize with a Smartphone and are not phones in themselves. We have ported Android on to a much smaller board and built a wearable phone,” says Sukant, a Beethoven fan who is the resident designer of the group. It is going to be a new revolution in the world of TIME.
Budget 2013-14: ‘Keep your expectations low’
Whenever a finance minister sits down to prepare the Budget, there are five or six issues he has to keep in mind. The first is macroeconomic issues: the current macroeconomic issues are the various deficits, inflation which refuses to go away, interest rates as a result of that, and then savings and investment, which will include the flow of foreign funds – FII and FDI. Now, we discussed this last year, that the last Budget was the last chance Budget of the UPA government because the next Budget would be just before elections, and this year is the last full Budget of the UPA government. Next year would be a vote on account Budget. So, whatever has to be done has to be done now.
Last year’s Budget was clearly regressive. Our financial situations went backwards. And now when the old finance minister or the new finance minister has taken over again, where Chidambaram taking over from Pranab Mukherjee. And he is trying to reverse everything that Pranab Mukherjee did. So much change does not even occur when governments change. The finance minister has options, he has very difficult options. I understand, he has reduced the expenditure of the government by over Rs 100,000 crore in this year’s Budget. But he has a very difficult task. The starting point has to be control of the fiscal and revenue deficit. Whatever maybe the immediate price that the government has to pay, it is important in the national interest that the government does it. A bitter pill today will lead to better health tomorrow.
Saina Nehwal retains world’s second rank
Indian shuttler, Saina Nehwal, who became the world number second among the all, is aiming for the top slot this year. One of the ideal sports women decided after a gap of two years to grab the first position among the shuttler all over the world. Olympic bronze-medallist Saina Nehwal attained a new high as she climbed to a career-best second in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings released in January 2013.
A well known, Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal survived a scare from lower-ranked Japanese Nozomi Okuhara before advancing to the semifinals of the Malaysian Super Series in the women’s singles competition. On a day she regained her world number 2 spot, India ace Saina Nehwal produced a dominant performance to cruise into the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Open Super Series with a straight-game victory over Hong Kong’s Pui Yin Yip.
Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal sailed into the second round of Malaysia Open after registering a straight-set victory over Singapore’s Gu Juan in the women’s singles event. In the second game, Tai once again opened up an 8-3 lead. Saina tried to break Tai’s game but the Chinese Taipei girl was well prepared for the challenge as she led 11-6 at the breather.
